Background on Baccarat

Baccarat is a casino card game where you can bet on three possible outcomes: “player”, “banker” or “tie”. There are several variants of the game including punto banco, Baccarat banque a.k.a. “à deux tableaux” and Baccarat chemin de fer. Interestingly, the chemin de fer version of Baccarat is the most original version and is still very popular in its native French. It is notably played by 007 in several of the James Bond films, lending the game its fair share of allure. Punto banco is most popular in North America, the UK, Australia, Scandinavia and in Macau.

How to Play Baccarat Squeeze

Playing Baccarat Squeeze is fairly straightforward. Here is a simple breakdown of the game:

  • The “player” and “banker” are each dealt a hand of two cards.
  • You place a bet on one of the three outcomes:
    1. 1. Either the player wins.
    2. 2. The banker wins.
    3. 3. Or they will tie.
  • The winner is the one with the hand of the highest value.

The Deck

Classically six standard decks of cards are shuffled together to make a Baccarat deck. But in punto banco Baccarat, the number of decks can vary ranging from 4 decks to 6 or 8 decks. This combined deck made out of several decks is referred to as a “shoe”.

Calculating the Value of a Hand

Each card has a point value as follows:

CardPoint Value
2 -9Face Value
100 points
J, Q, K0 points
Ace1 points
JokerNot used

In Baccarat Squeeze, the value of a hand is based on the right-hand digit of the sum of the cards. It might sound a bit confusing, but it’s simple when you break it down. For example, if you have a 2 and a 5, then your hand equals the sum of those cards, 7.

  • 2 + 5 = 7
  • Right-hand digit of 7 = 7
  • Value of hand = 7

But if you got a 9 and 3, the sum of your cards would be 12, meaning that you drop the left digit, which makes your hand worth a value of 2.

  • 9 + 3 = 12
  • Right-hand digit of 12 = 2
  • Value of hand = 2

The maximum value a hand can have is 9.

Baccarat Squeeze Ritual

Many seasoned Baccarat Squeeze players practice something called a Baccarat Squeeze Ritual. This adds a level of interest and superstition to the game, and you can find this practiced not only in live table Baccarat in casinos, but also in online Baccarat. Squeezing is wildly popular in Macau, where Baccarat is especially hot. Some players even blow on their cards in order to blow away bad numbers and in hopes of getting a favourable number to appear instead.

How it works
In Baccarat Squeeze, the cards are dealt faced down. When you squeeze the cards in real life, you bend them in a particular way, so that part of the card becomes visible. You can lift it from the bottom edge of the card or tap to rotate it and turn up the long side of the gard. There is also the possibility to squeeze the card from the corner, revealing it from a different angle. It’s important to note that when you squeeze in Baccarat, the key is to carefully cover the number of the card with your thumbs, so as to not give away too much.

The Rules

Baccarat is a fairly simple game, but you might not believe it when you look at the rules. The player does not get to choose their moves in the game, as each action is determined by the hand the player is dealt. That can be very straightforward, or it can get a bit confusing because the action of the dealer hinges on the outcome of the player’s hand. Here’s a guide to the rules of Baccarat to make it clear and easy to understand:

If either one of the players receives a hand with a total of 8 or 9, then it is immediately announced and both players cards are turned over to determine the winner.

Player’s Rule
If the total of the player’s hand is between 0 and 5, they receive a third card.
If the player’s hand is 6 or 7, they do not receive a third card.

Banker’s Rule
If the player did not receive a third card, then the banker plays by the same rule as the player did, meaning that if the banker’s hand is a value of 0 to 5, the banker can receive a third card. If the banker’s hand is 6 or 7, they do not receive a third card.

If the player drew a third card:
Then the banker’s action is determined by the third card drawn by the player.

Guide to Squeezing Cards in Baccarat

What you see when you turn up the bottom edge of your card, can tell you a lot about what is in your hand. Here are a few terms referring to what you see under your card when you squeeze and what they mean.:

Squeezing Paint
If what you see when you squeeze the card is the beginning of a picture, then you definitely have a face card, which are all worth 0 whether it is a King, Queen or a Jack. Because of that, some players don’t spend any more time on a card if they have “squeezed paint”, which it is called when you get a face card. Some simply turn the card over immediately and move on to the next card.

Squeezing an Ace
This refers to when you squeeze your card and all you see is blank. That means you have an ace, because it is the only card which doesn’t have anything printed at the top.

If your card was not an ace nor a face card, then it has to be a number card between 2 and 10. That means you’ll either see a symbol (also known as a “pip”) in the top center of the card, which is called “squeezing a point” or you’ll see two symbols, which is referred to as “squeezing legs”.

Squeezing a Point
If you squeezed a point, it means you have either a 2 or a 3. To figure out which of the two options your card is, bend the card further to reveal the centre. If there is a symbol in the centre of the card, it is a 3, if not, it’s a 2.

Squeezing Legs
If you squeezed legs, it means you could have a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10. To deduce which of these you may have, you can rotate the card and continue squeezing it to narrow down the possible options.

Two Sides
When you see two symbols, it’s called “two sides” and it means you have either a 4 or a 5 on your hand. By rotating your card back to the upright position and continuing to squeeze it in that direction, you’ll be able to tell whether it is a 4 or a 5. If it’s a 4 you will not be able to see a a central symbol on the face of the card, if it’s a 5, the symbol will show.

Three Sides
If you find three symbols on the side of your card, it is either a 6, 7 or 8. This is called “three sides” and similarly to how it worked with two sides, you simply rotate the card back to the upright position and continue squeezing it to find out which number it is. If there is a central pip on the card, it is a 7 or 8, while if there is none, it is a 6 or 7.

Next you’ll need to rotate the card 180 degrees and squeeze it again.

  • If you did not see a central pip on the first end of the card and now you see one on the second end, your card is a 7.
  • If you did not see a central pip on the first end of the card and you also do not see one on the second end of the card, your card is a 6.
  • If you did see a central pip on the first end of the card and you do not see one on the second end, your card is a 7.
  • If you did see a central pip on the first end of the card and you also see one on the second end, your card is an 8.

Four Sides
When you squeeze your card from the side and see four symbols, it is called “four sides”. This means you have either a 9 or a 10. To determine which of these it is, you should rotate the card back to the upright position and continue to squeeze it to reveal the central pip. It will either be placed below a grouping of four pips, meaning your card is a 9, or the pip will be placed in the centre of 4 other pips, meaning it is a 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Baccarat Squeeze unique?
The interesting and unusual thing about Baccarat is that it’s quite a simple game, and the outcome is determined by chance alone. The player does not participate in choosing to draw extra cards and their hand is only influenced by the cards they are dealt. That means that Baccarat is not a game of skill or strategy. It is purely a game of chance, which appeals to some players. Another thing which makes Baccarat so popular is the favourable odds.

What does card squeezing do?
Card squeezing in Baccarat essentially makes the game more fun and exciting, since all moves in the game are determined by chance. Some players swear by certain ways of squeezing the cards or blowing on them to affect the outcome of the game. The ritual of card squeezing also makes the online version of Baccarat Squeeze more realistic and life-like, because it gives the feeling that you’re dealing with real cards. Whether you do it for fun or out of superstition, card squeezing certainly makes the game more interesting.

Do I have to squeeze?
No you don’t, you can choose to play a version of Baccarat without the squeeze aspect. Then the cards are laid down face up on the playing table. You can also choose to squeeze very fast or even reveal your cards immediately, but it’s somewhat missing the fun part of the game.

But can’t I just count the cards?
This would seem to be the only way that strategy could play in to Baccarat, but you already bet before the cards are laid out so this wouldn’t be useful for figuring out what your card would be. Also the deck used in Baccarat is composed of 6 regular decks of playing cards, making it statistically unlikely that one could actually work out a card-counting strategy. Aside from this, online Baccarat is based on algorithms, not physical cards.
